By car

Fågelsjö lies three kilometres east of the E45, the Inlandsvägen, roughly halfway between Orsa and Sveg. Turn off at Fågelsjö vägskäl (signposted Fågelsjö / Världsarv) and follow Fågelsjövägen into the village. From Ljusdal take either road 296 via Färila and Los to the E45, or national road 84 to Sveg and then the E45 south. The roads are paved all the way; in winter they are ploughed but expect snow and ice, and watch for moose.

By train – the Inlandsbanan

In summer the Inlandsbanan runs daily between Mora and Östersund (and on to Gällivare), in 2026 from 15 June to 12 August. The train stops at Fågelsjö for about 20 minutes, and coffee can be pre-ordered for the stop. The station is a couple of kilometres from the village centre; a night at STF Gästis combines well with continuing on the next day's train. Timetable and booking at inlandsbanan.se or +46 771 53 53 53.
The nearest stations with year-round service are Ljusdal (trains from Stockholm and Sundsvall) and Mora (trains from Stockholm via Borlänge). From there you continue by bus.
By bus

Route 46, the inland bus Mora–Orsa–Sveg–Östersund, stops at Fågelsjö vägskäl on the E45 all year, normally two or three times a day in each direction. Sveg is about half an hour away. From the junction it is three kilometres to walk or be picked up. Timetables from Dalatrafik and Länstrafiken Jämtland.
Within Ljusdal Municipality, X-trafik runs buses between Ljusdal, Färila and Los. The combination Ljusdal–Los–Fågelsjö requires a change and some planning; ask the hostel about a lift.
By air
The nearest airports are Sveg (Härjedalen Sveg Airport, about 40 km, scheduled flights from Stockholm Arlanda), Mora–Siljan (about 100 km) and Åre Östersund (about 190 km). A hire car is recommended; public transport from the airports is sparse.
Once you are here
The village is small – the farm museum, the hostel, the community hall and the chapel are all within a few hundred metres along Fågelsjövägen. Parking is at the farm. There is mobile coverage in the village but it can be weak in the forest and on the lake; download maps in advance. See the map for all the places.
